Kilimanjaro: Choosing a Western Company Over a Local Operator

If you are thinking of climbing Kilimanjaro you have to choose the right company. Here is a comprehensive guide to climbing Kilimanjaro and choosing a Western Company over a Local Operator.  When planning an expedition to conquer the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make is selecting the right trekking company. While local operators may seem like the obvious choice for their perceived familiarity with the terrain and lower costs. Check out our reviews and our upcoming trips.

A Race to the Bottom

A fierce competition is underway to offer the most budget-friendly excursions up Kilimanjaro. However, this relentless pursuit is jeopardizing the sustainability of conducting trips to the mountain. Many companies exploit porters by not providing fair compensation, relying solely on gratuities. During each expedition I embark upon, porters from other groups often seek sustenance from our team.

Furthermore, we’ve found it necessary to employ a security team to safeguard our equipment and our clients’ belongings, as employees of local companies seize opportunities to pilfer from us.

During every ascent, particularly on summit nights, I witness individuals being assisted up the mountain, unable to manage their own backpacks, and others grappling with severe altitude sickness. These incidents, though merely a snapshot of the hazards inherent in expeditions lasting less than 7 days, underscore the toll that this race to the bottom exacts on safety standards on Kilimanjaro.
