Step 1

The first thing to do is pick the correct itinerary. After 15 years of trekking this famous trail we have designed the best itinerary. Our classic Inca trail trek hikes into Machu Picchu through the sun gate late in the afternoon on day 4. We stay in the best campsites including the magical Phuyupatamarca high above Machu Picchu Mountain.Packing for your Inca Trail Trek

Step 2

Plan your trip early. There are 500 permits per day to trek this famous Inca trail. This includes porters, guides and trekkers. In reality there are 180 to 200 permits for trekkers. These permits go on sale in October the year before. So you are looking to trek in June 2024, permits will be available in October 2022. Once the permits for that start date are sold out there is no way to enter the Inca Trail on that date. Read more.

Step 3

Pick the best months for trekking. The best months for trekking to Machu Picchu will be March to November. We are big fans of trekking in May, June, July and August. However, any month in the predominately dry season will work for trekking to Machu Picchu. It will be warmer in March, April and October November. It is a little colder in June and July but these are two of our favorite months for trekking this famous trail.
