The Everest Base Camp trek with Ian Taylor Trekking was an incredible experience. This was in large part due to the planning, organization and commitment of the Ian Taylor Trekking team members. Safety and the well-being of the entire group was paramount to this team.
Join the Experts
I would recommend Ian Taylor Trekking for future adventures and will definitely go with them, should an opportunity arise. Prior to the trek, we were provided with detailed information of what to expect, the training regimen to follow and what to pack. Laura & Ian were always available to answer my questions resulting in me getting all the necessary clothing, equipment & medication prior to the start of this trip. This meant that I was aware of what to expect in Nepal & the mountains including possible delays flight delays to/from Lukla due to weather.
Arriving in Kathmandu
Upon arriving in Kathmandu, clearing customs & immigration was simple & straightforward. I was warmly greeted by the team members at the airport. The team in Kathmandu arranged for me to visit the temples.
Weather Delays
The start of the trek started by getting to the airport early. Due to poor weather in Lukla, all flights were cancelled. The trekking team arranged for us (16 persons) to be transported to Lukla (or vicinity) by helicopter.
Their ability to accomplish this is a testament to a great team. Because of the late arrival at Lukla, we completed most of the Lukla-Monjo-Namche Bazaar trek in one day and were able to follow the planned schedule.
Picking Better Lodges
The hotels/tea houses were better than I expected and there was a range of items to select from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The team ate together allowing us to make new friends from all walks of life.
Decision Making
After talking with Ian at Namche Bazaar, my plan was to hike to EBC and return via helicopter from Gorek Shep. On the way to Dingboche, the weather forecast for EBC/Gorek Shep was such that helicopters will not be able to land after our arrival there (turns out this was the case for several days). Ian indicated and I agreed that I should take a helicopter from Dingboche to Kala Patthar to Kathmandu.
Safety First
This action demonstrated the commitment to safety by Ian Taylor Trekking. This helicopter was arranged by the team in Kathmandu and I was able to go to Kala Patthar and return safely.
