Japan is a land where ancient tradition meets raw natural beauty, where sacred mountains rise above timeless villages and centuries-old trails still echo with the footsteps of travelers from another era. When most people think of trekking in Japan, one iconic image comes to mind: Mount Fuji. But what if you could experience far more than just Japan’s most famous peak?

What if you could combine the spiritual, cultural, and physical journey of multiple legendary routes into one seamless adventure? That is exactly what we have created at Ian Taylor Trekking. This is not just a trek, it’s a curated journey through the very soul of Japan.

Mount Fuji 2025

The Ultimate Japanese Trekking Experience

Our Japan trekking itinerary is designed to go beyond the obvious. Yes, you will climb Mount Fuji—the highest and most iconic mountain in Japan—but we take it further. We combine Fuji with two of Japan’s most extraordinary yet lesser-known trekking experiences: the historic Nakasendo Trail and the sacred Mount Ontake. This is a rare opportunity to experience Japan in a way few travelers ever will.

Mount Fuji – More Than Just a Climb

Standing at 12,388 feet (3,776m) , Mount Fuji is not only Japan’s highest mountain but also a symbol of the country’s identity. Climbing Fuji is a rite of passage, one that blends physical challenge with deep cultural significance.

But how you climb Fuji matters.

At Ian Taylor Trekking, we don’t rush the experience. We carefully manage pacing, acclimatization, and timing to give you the best possible chance of reaching the summit while fully enjoying the journey. Our approach ensures you’re not just ticking a box—you’re experiencing something meaningful.

Watching the sunrise from the summit of Mount Fuji is one of the most powerful moments you can have in the mountains. It’s a reward that stays with you long after the trek is over.

The Nakasendo Trail – Walking Through History

Long before modern Japan existed, the Nakasendo Trail connected Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo), serving as one of the country’s most important trade routes during the Edo period.

Today, sections of this trail remain beautifully preserved. Walking the Nakasendo is like stepping back in time. You’ll pass through traditional post towns such as Magome and Tsumago, where wooden buildings, cobbled paths, and quiet mountain scenery transport you to another era.

This isn’t just a hike—it’s a cultural immersion.

You’ll experience authentic Japanese hospitality, stay in traditional inns, and enjoy local cuisine that reflects the history of the region. The pace allows you to absorb the surroundings, connect with the culture, and truly understand what makes Japan so unique.

Mount Ontake – Japan’s Sacred Volcano

While Mount Fuji draws global attention, Mount Ontake offers something different, something deeper. As Japan’s second-highest volcano, Ontake is both powerful and spiritual. It has long been a site of pilgrimage, and trekking here carries a sense of reverence that you can feel with every step.

The landscape is dramatic, with volcanic terrain, alpine ridges, and sweeping views that rival anything in Japan. Yet, unlike Fuji, Ontake remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. This is where you connect with Japan on a more personal level. It’s quieter. More introspective. And incredibly rewarding.

A Seamless Blend of Culture and Adventure

What makes this itinerary truly special is how these three elements, Fuji, Nakasendo, and Ontake—come together.

You’re not just climbing mountains. You’re experiencing:

  • Ancient trails walked by samurai and merchants
  • Sacred peaks revered for centuries
  • Traditional villages that preserve Japan’s heritage
  • A balance of physical challenge and cultural depth

This is what modern trekking should be a journey that challenges you physically while enriching you mentally and emotionally.
