Today you will be picked up from your hotel for a full, but scenic travel day, covering roughly 375–395 km in about 7–9 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, and stops. The likely route runs from Entebbe around Kampala and through Mityana, Mubende, and Fort Portal before reaching Kasese. Most of the journey is on paved roads, beginning with busy urban traffic before transitioning to rural villages, farms, banana plantations, tea-growing country, and increasingly hilly scenery. After Fort Portal, you may enjoy your first views of the Rwenzori Mountains if the weather is clear. The journey includes a lunch stop, with arrival in Kasese during the late afternoon or early evening, allowing time for dinner, a trekking briefing, and final preparation for your trek.
After an early breakfast, check out of your hotel in Kasese and transfer by road to Omukorukumi, the starting point of your Rwenzori adventure. Here, at approximately 1,544 metres above sea level, you will meet your mountain guides, porters, and support crew for a short briefing and final equipment check before handing over your main trekking bag to the porters. The hike begins with a steady ascent through the Kasanzi community, passing local homes, farms, coffee and banana plantations, schools, and churches while offering an introduction to the culture and daily life of the Bakonzo people. After several rest stops along the community trail, you will enter Rwenzori Mountains National Park via the remote Bukurungu Wilderness Trail, where cultivated hillsides gradually give way to lush tropical montane forest. Continue for approximately one kilometre beneath the forest canopy to Kasanzi Camp, where you will settle in for your first night in the mountains. The trek takes approximately 4–6 hours and involves an estimated net elevation gain of 1,106 metres.

After a hot breakfast at Kasanzi Camp, begin the steady ascent toward Kambeho Camp. In Lhukonzo, Kambeho means “a place of coldness,” and the campsite is also locally known as Lhume Camp after the nearby River Lhume. The trail climbs through montane forest before entering the atmospheric heather, or ericaceous, zone, where enormous tree heathers are draped with thick mosses and strands of lichen resembling an old man’s beard. Along the way, enjoy views across deep valleys, forested ridges, and the rugged slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but this habitat supports blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and numerous forest birds, including the brilliantly coloured and range-restricted Rwenzori turaco. Arrive at Kambeho Camp in the late afternoon and warm up with a hot drink before dinner and an overnight stay amid the cool, misty mountain landscape. The trek covers approximately 15 kilometres and normally takes 8–9 hours.

After an early breakfast and a cold night at Kambeho Camp, begin trekking alongside the River Lhume before tackling the steep ascent toward Mughule Pass—the most demanding climb on this section of the Bukurungu Trail. The route rises to approximately 3,890 metres, rewarding your effort with expansive views across the Rwenzori landscape and, in clear weather, toward the Virunga Mountains along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of the Congo border. After resting near the high point, descend carefully past the beautiful Lake Mughule and continue through a striking landscape of giant heathers, moss-covered trees, valleys, streams, and waterfalls. Mobile-network reception may be available near the Mughule high point, providing a rare opportunity to make calls before continuing deeper into the mountains. Several unnamed peaks rise above the trail, some of which may be explored with your guide as optional acclimatization excursions in preparation for the Portal Peaks and Mount Gessi. Continue across the River Lamia and through the heather zone to Lamia Camp, where you can relax, explore nearby waterfalls, enjoy dinner, and settle in for the night. The trek covers approximately 12.2 kilometres and normally takes 7–8 hours.

After breakfast at Lamia Camp, set out on your final day along the remote Bukurungu Wilderness Trail before joining the Rwenzori’s established Central Circuit. The route initially descends through the heather zone, passing the scenic Bukurungu lakes and traversing a wild landscape of moss-covered vegetation, valleys, streams, and high mountain ridges. In clear weather, the trail may offer views of the Portal Peaks and Mount Stanley, including Margherita Peak. Continue toward the Lower Bigo Bog, where the Bukurungu route meets the Central Circuit, and cross the wetland using wooden boardwalks before reaching the bridge over the Bujuku River. From the river, make a gentle final ascent to Bigo Camp, where the crew will pitch the tents for the night. Depending on trail arrangements and availability, you may continue to nearby John Matte Hut for a warmer and more sheltered overnight stay. The trek generally takes approximately 5–6 hours.

After an early breakfast at Bigo Camp, begin a long and demanding ascent into the Rwenzori’s high-altitude alpine zone. The trail crosses the Upper Bigo Bog, where wooden boardwalks help hikers negotiate the deep, waterlogged ground among giant lobelias, groundsels, and other remarkable Afro-alpine vegetation. After crossing the Bujuku River, continue past Lake Bujuku, surrounded by the imposing massifs of Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley. Leaving the route toward Bujuku Camp, climb steadily across increasingly rocky and exposed terrain as vegetation becomes sparse and temperatures fall. The day ends at Irene Lakes Camp, situated on the northeastern flank of Mount Stanley at approximately 4,495 metres. After arriving, settle into camp, enjoy a hot meal, and prepare your clothing, climbing equipment, headlamp, food, and water for the early-morning ascent of Margherita Peak. At this elevation, move slowly, remain well hydrated, and inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms of altitude illness.

After a very early breakfast, begin the summit ascent from Irene Camp toward Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda and the third-highest summit in Africa. The climb crosses steep, rocky, and potentially icy terrain, with glacier conditions varying according to the weather and season. Ropes, crampons, harnesses, helmets, and other technical equipment may be required, and the ascent must be undertaken under the close supervision of experienced mountain guides. Maintaining a slow, steady pace, continue toward the summit of Mount Stanley, where—weather and conditions permitting—you will reach Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres. Pause briefly for photographs and to celebrate this remarkable achievement before beginning the careful descent to Irene Camp. After a short rest and a hot or packed lunch, continue descending through the rocky alpine zone, past Lake Bujuku and across the boggy upper valleys toward Bigo Camp. Arrive in the late afternoon or evening for dinner and a well-earned overnight rest after the expedition’s longest and most demanding day.

After breakfast at Bigo Camp, begin the final descent of your eight-day Rwenzori expedition. Follow the Central Circuit through the upper moorlands and montane forest, passing John Matte Camp and descending over rocky and occasionally muddy terrain toward the Kurt Shafer Bridge, situated near the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Continue to Nyabitaba Camp, where you may stop for lunch or a short rest before completing the final section through dense tropical forest. Along the way, remain alert for black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, three-horned chameleons, and colourful forest birds such as the Rwenzori turaco. The trek concludes at Mihunga Gate in the late afternoon, where you will check out of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, say farewell to the mountain crew, and meet your driver for the transfer to your hotel in Kasese. A hot shower, dinner, and a comfortable night provide a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable journey through the Rwenzori Mountains.

After breakfast at your hotel in Kasese, check out and transfer to Kasese Airstrip for your scheduled domestic flight to Entebbe International Airport. Complete check-in formalities before boarding a light aircraft for the scenic journey east, with possible aerial views of the Rwenzori foothills, Uganda’s fertile countryside, and Lake Victoria as you approach Entebbe. The journey’s duration varies according to the aircraft’s routing and any intermediate stops, but generally takes between approximately 1¼ and 3 hours. Upon arrival at Entebbe, connect with your onward international flight or transfer to a nearby hotel, depending on your travel arrangements. The journey combines remote wilderness, sustained ascents, deep mud, slippery boardwalks, steep rock, fixed ropes, glacier travel, and rapidly changing weather before reaching Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres. Careful preparation will make the experience safer and far more enjoyable.
Most importantly, arrive fit, patient, and prepared for a rugged wilderness experience. The Rwenzoris reward flexibility: trail conditions can be slow, camps are basic, and the weather can change within minutes. A positive attitude, careful pacing, and willingness to follow the guides’ instructions are just as important as physical strength. Ian Taylor Trekking describes the climb as involving glacier travel, fixed ropes, and technical scrambling, underscoring that Margherita Peak is a mountaineering objective rather than a straightforward walk-up summit.
Preparing for Mount Stanley is different from training for a race, a gym challenge, or a single difficult hike. This is a sustained wilderness expedition involving consecutive trekking days, substantial elevation changes, deep mud, slippery roots and boardwalks, steep rock, cold alpine conditions, and a technical summit ascent to Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres.
You do not need to be an elite athlete, but general fitness alone is not enough. Your training should prepare you to move steadily for many hours, recover overnight, climb again the following morning, and remain strong enough for the technical summit and long descent. The challenge comes from the accumulation of effort across the expedition. Climbers should be ready for:
Training should therefore develop aerobic endurance, strength, balance, mountain-specific stamina, downhill durability, technical competence and the ability to recover between consecutive days.
Aerobic fitness provides the engine for long, controlled days in the mountains. Most sessions should be completed at an easy-to-moderate intensity where you can still speak in full sentences.
Useful activities include:
Most aerobic sessions should feel sustainable rather than exhausting. The objective is to train consistently and increase the time you can remain active without repeatedly pushing close to your limit.
Mount Stanley demands more than cardiovascular fitness. Your legs, hips, ankles and core must repeatedly stabilize your body on steep, wet and uneven ground.
Strength sessions should include exercises such as:
Begin with controlled bodyweight movements before adding resistance. Strength training should make you more durable without leaving you too sore to complete your hiking and aerobic sessions.
Several stages involve prolonged ascent, including an estimated gain of roughly 1,000 metres between Bigo Camp and Irene Camp. Develop climbing endurance through hills, stairs, stadium steps, incline treadmills or repeated step-ups.
Build gradually toward longer sessions during which you can maintain a slow, steady rhythm. The goal is not to climb as quickly as possible; it is to keep your legs working efficiently after several hours of accumulated fatigue.
If you live in a flat area, use stairwells, a StairMaster, stadium steps or a treadmill capable of reaching a meaningful incline. Repeated shorter climbs can provide an effective substitute for one continuous mountain ascent.
The descent from Margherita Peak to Bigo Camp involves approximately 1,669 metres of elevation loss, followed by another major descent to Mihunga Gate. Poorly conditioned legs can become sore, unstable and vulnerable to injury.
Include:
Increase downhill volume carefully. Too much too soon can cause significant muscle soreness and interrupt the rest of your training.
The Rwenzoris are renowned for mud, bogs, tangled roots and wet boardwalks. Whenever possible, train on rough trails, grass, mud, rocks and uneven surfaces. This builds balance, ankle stability and confidence with foot placement.
Wet-weather training is especially valuable. Use selected training hikes to test your waterproof clothing, gaiters, boots, gloves and pack protection. You should know how your equipment performs in prolonged rain before arriving in Uganda.
Some sessions should be completed with the boots, socks, daypack and trekking poles you plan to use. Gradually add the approximate weight you expect to carry during the trek, without making every session a heavy-pack workout.
Use longer sessions to test:
The aim is to discover and correct small problems at home, rather than high in the Rwenzori Mountains.
Mount Stanley is not one long hike; it is a sequence of demanding days with limited recovery. Gradually introduce back-to-back training sessions, such as a long hike on Saturday followed by a shorter, easier walk on Sunday.
The second session does not always need to be difficult. Its purpose is to teach your body to move again while mildly fatigued. Consistency and repeatability are more valuable than one enormous weekend workout followed by several days of exhaustion.
Unlike Kilimanjaro or Everest Base Camp, Margherita Peak is a technical mountaineering objective. The summit can involve fixed ropes, crampons, a climbing harness, an ascender, glacier travel and scrambling over steep rock.

A practical mountaineering course is strongly recommended for anyone without previous technical experience. Confirm with Ian Taylor Trekking which skills are expected and which equipment will be supplied.
A structured 12-week program may be sufficient for someone who already exercises consistently and has recent mountain experience. For Mount Stanley, however, four to six months is a more appropriate preparation window for many clients, particularly those who are new to multi-day trekking or technical mountaineering.
A sensible progression would be:
Avoid trying to compensate for missed preparation with excessive last-minute training. Fitness develops through gradual, repeatable work—not a few punishing sessions immediately before departure.
A balanced week during the main preparation period could include:
As the expedition approaches, introduce occasional back-to-back hiking days and longer sessions on rough terrain. Adjust the volume to your experience, recovery and injury history.
During the final six to eight weeks, complete several trek-rehearsal days. These should include hills or stairs, uneven ground, a realistic daypack, expedition boots, poles, water, snacks and waterproof layers.
A successful rehearsal should demonstrate that you can:
The objective is not to finish destroyed. It is to gather useful information, refine your pacing and confirm that your equipment works.
Strong fitness provides valuable physical reserve, but it does not prevent altitude illness. Use that fitness conservatively by starting slowly, maintaining controlled breathing, drinking regularly, eating before you feel depleted and communicating honestly with your guides.
Headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness, poor coordination or worsening breathlessness must be reported promptly. Summit decisions should always reflect the guides’ assessment of your health, the weather and glacier conditions.
Train for the mountain you will actually climb. For Mount Stanley, that means preparing for prolonged moisture, difficult footing, consecutive climbing days, significant elevation gain, major descents, cold high camps and a technical summit, not simply improving general cardiovascular fitness.
Build your aerobic engine, strengthen your entire body, train specifically for climbing and descending, rehearse with your equipment, learn the necessary mountaineering skills and protect your recovery. Arrive prepared, rested and ready to respect the pace of the expedition.
We categorize Margherita Peak as a true mountaineering challenge involving glacier travel, fixed ropes and technical scrambling.
Not everyone will have access to hills, but this is the best way to train your body and legs for down hill hiking. Depending on your chosen adventure you do need to assess the level of downhill. We have elevation gains available for all of our key trips. I encourage you to review the daily elevation drops and what type of terrain you will be walking on.
For example, on our Inca trail treks you will be drop 700m/ 2,296 feet to 1,000m/ 3,280 feet on different days all on steep rocky stairs. On Kilimanjaro you will drop 2,800m/ 9,186 feet in one day on scree and rock and this is very challenging on your legs and joints.
You have just walked for days on end you have reached your goal but not you have to retrace your steps, often in a quicker time frame. Hiking downhill will take its toll on your joints. Fore sure, the downhill hike will take more wear and tear on your joints and muscles than the uphill.
You do need to use effective training techniques to minimize the impact on your body. Descending using good technique means that you move faster and feel lighter. Remember, 80% of accidents happen on the way down.
We live in Eagle-vail Colorado with amazing access to altitude and a wide range of mountain terrain to train on. In Colorado we can train all year round on hilly terrain preparing for Kilimanjaro, Himalayan trekking and mountaineering trips. I know most of you are joining our trips from sea level and with minimal access to hill training. I encourage you to get out to Colorado doing some multi-day hiking in preparation for your chosen adventure.
If you do not have access to hills and mountains, you must figure out other ways to prepare your knee joints to handle downhill stress. From a knee perspective, downhill hiking means eccentric loading and typically thousands of repetitions of it. Eccentric loading (the lengthening phase of a contraction) is especially challenging to what is called the patellofemoral joint of the knee. This is where the knee cap, meets the femur. Inadequate strength, poor mechanics and lack of exposure to this type of loading can turn downhill forces into injury producing stress. Prior to your trekking trip you need to start implementing sport specific training into our general preparedness programming.
Hiking uphill is all concentric muscle action (muscle active while shortening) at the knee joint without any eccentric loading (loading while muscle is lengthening). Concentric only exercises tend to cause less mechanical stress, load and pain to joints and tendons than do exercises that have eccentric phases. What goes up must come down.
You must prepare our body and specifically your knees to handle downhill hiking. Depending on the trip, you really need 6 months of some sport specific training into our general preparedness programming.
The strength movements below are similar but slightly different in specific ways. We purposely only hit each one once per week because too much volume of these exercises could quickly lead to an over training injury, so be careful. I would recommend adding in additional hip flexor and quadriceps mobility work at the end of your training sessions as well to maintain good length tension relationships and to protect your spine.
Increase vertical loading volume of the knees with a sight posterior to anterior (back to front) force vector. Get exposed and accustomed to decelerating the vertical and forward forces using primarily a knee strategy. Transition from doing most lunges and squats with a 3 points of contact foot position to a more heel elevated position where we contact and press through the forefoot.
The 3 points of contact foot position is the most stable position for the foot and encourages a balance of hip and thigh musculature – great for general preparedness training. Transitioning to a heels elevated position where the forces are applied through the forefoot places most of the stress on the quadriceps and knees – optimal for downhill hiking training.
You should consider adding these movements into your weekly training 2 times per week. Add 3-5 sets of 10-15 repetitions (per leg)
1). Heels Elevated Goblet Squat
2). Forward Alternating Lunge with Farmers Carry Loading
3). Forward Alternating Drop from Box Lunges
4). Banded Posterior to Anterior (PA) Forward Lunges
One of the best ways of mitigating the risk of musculoskeletal issues is by carrying a light pack. Then build up the weight you carry over time. An overly heavy backpack is not recommended in the early stages of your training.
Extract its biggest toll on your body during steep and/or long downhill sections, so a hiker should always aim to travel as lightly as the dictates of their skillset and the environment into which they are venturing allow.
If you are carrying weight on longer hike you should slowly build up the weight you carry. You should also consider carry water uphill and dump as much water/ weight as possible for your downhill. Always assess the weight you are carrying for each hike and always build up slowly over time. You do not want to get injured.
On Monday, the 23rd of March, 2009, Graham Kinch and Ian Taylor officially opened the Mount Everest Primary School in Kitandwe, Uganda. Graham and Ian climbed Mount Everest in the spring of 2008 to raise money for the Kitandwe School Project in partnership with Fields of Life. This concluded a three-year project in which they climbed 4 mountains on 4 continents to build the school. They raised $100,000 for the school and continue to support its future.
The school consists of two blocks totaling seven classrooms and an office, toilet facilities, teachers accommodation, Kindergarten block and a bore-hole pump supplying water to over 600 villagers. The school also doubles-up as a multi-purpose community building.
An appropriate support structure of a Board of Management, trained teachers, a Principal, a PTA, and official curricula, etc., is already in place. In 2013, the Mount Everest Primary was number one in it’s district.
This support structure will ensure this investment will be fully and effectively utilized. The school has 240 pupils in classes at present and hopes to expand. A small group from one of our Kilimanjaro trips raised money to help build a new Kindergarten building. We have 40 children sponsored through Fields of life child sponsorship, we currently need a further 48 child sponsors in our school. Click here to find out more.

On your visit you will experience village life in Uganda and see how they cut a living from their environment. We will sample the local food, play football with the kids and experience the way of life in rural and urban Uganda. We will also add in a visit to the Equator before leaving this beautiful country. In our opinion, La Sportiva have great footwear options at the moment. Finding a boot that will last a long time, be comfortable, waterproof and have good support, is always our goal. This option is both a great trekking boot as well as a light mountaineering boot for alpine climbs. They are crampon compatible, however still a lightweight option good for a Kilimanjaro climb. Having the slightly more rigid sole helps keep your foot sturdy and protected on the trails on Kilimanjaro. They will also be a warm option for the cold night spent going up to the summit! These boots would be a great option for the trekking portions on Mount Elbrus or Aconcagua as well.

Another great option is the Salomon Quest 4 GTX Trekking boots. More and more people are using these trekking boots on a wide range of our trekking adventures in Nepal and around the world. They are comfortable, sturdy, waterproof and a very resilient trekking boot for Kilimanjaro. They will give you the warmth you need on the cold night walking to the summit as well!

Ian has used the Scarpa Kenesis pro GTX trekking boots for a few years. They are a little heavier than other trekking boots but a great boot for Kilimanjaro. If you maintain them well, you will have them for years. Scarpa are always re-inventing trekking boots and if they fit your foot correctly, then they may be the right boot for you. They work great and last a long time.

Ian has also used a range of Mammut trekking boots over the years. He really likes the Mammut Trovat guide High trekking boots. They are really durable, reliable and will last a long time. The high ankle support is great for the rocky terrains you will encounter and all around a great boot for Kilimanjaro. All these boots will last a long time if you look after them well.

This is a strenuous, technical mountaineering expedition involving consecutive trekking days, steep ascents, deep mud, exposed boardwalks, rock scrambling, fixed ropes, glacier travel and a summit at 16,762 feet (5,109m). It is considerably more technical than Kilimanjaro.
Previous high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering experience are strongly recommended. Climbers should be familiar with crampons, an ice axe, a climbing harness, fixed ropes and an ascender. Those without these skills should complete a practical mountaineering course before departure. We have these course available.
You should be able to hike for six to eight hours over steep, uneven terrain on consecutive days while carrying a daypack. Training should focus on aerobic endurance zone 2 training, leg and core strength, balance, sustained climbing and controlled descending.

The Rwenzoris are wet throughout the year, and rain, mud and mist are common. Conditions range from warm and humid in the lower forest to cold, windy and potentially below freezing near the summit. Climbers must prepare for rapid weather changes.
Essential equipment includes waterproof trekking boots, gaiters, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, insulated gloves, a headlamp, trekking poles, dry bags and a suitable sleeping bag. Technical equipment may include crampons, an ice axe, helmet, harness, carabiners and an ascender. Confirm what is provided or available to rent before travelling.
Porters carry your main trekking bag and shared expedition equipment. You will carry a daypack containing water, snacks, waterproof clothing, warm layers, sunscreen, personal medication and other items needed during the day. Porter weight limits must be respected.
Accommodation on the mountain is basic and may include tents or simple huts, depending on the location. Facilities are limited, nights can be cold and damp, and showers are generally unavailable during the trek.

The itinerary allows for gradual ascent, but altitude affects everyone differently. Walk slowly, hydrate regularly, eat consistently and report headaches, nausea, dizziness, poor coordination or unusual breathlessness to your guide immediately.
The guides will assess your condition and determine whether you can continue. Depending on the situation, treatment, descent or evacuation may be required. Remote terrain and weather can make evacuation slow, so comprehensive insurance is essential.
We have three policy’s you can review. You should explicitly cover trekking and technical mountaineering above 5,000 metres, glacier travel, emergency evacuation, medical treatment, trip interruption and repatriation. Standard travel insurance often excludes these activities.
Mobile reception is intermittent and should not be relied upon. Electricity and charging facilities are extremely limited or unavailable at mountain camps. Bring fully charged power banks and keep electronics protected from moisture.
