Ray Farrell on Everest Base Camp

In October 2011 I went on a trip of a lifetime to Mount Everest Base camp with Ian Taylor Trekking. As a repeat customer of Ian’s, I had high expectations and was not disappointed! On arrival in Kathmandu we were met with by our head Sherpa Dawa and friendly smiles all round!
After checking into our hotel in downtown Thamel we were brought on a tour of the major sights in Kathmandu some of which were spectacular! After an early morning rise we boarded a nerve wracking but spectacular flight into Lukla in the heart of the Himalaya.
The following two weeks or so were spent trekking in the most amazing scenery, from stunning high peaks to well trodden rope bridges! Along the way you find yourself immersed in Sherpa culture, from prayer flags fluttering in the wind to the constant passing of laden down yaks!We stayed in the local tea houses along the way with excellent food and always greeted with a smile! The banter and craic in the lodges will long live in the memory! Although the days were tough it was well worth the early starts along the way to catch some of the best views in the Himalaya.
Finally our goal was in sight! After a final push we reached Everest base camp, after spending some time there and the obligatory photographs it was time to start the journey back to Lukla to the Irish bar for some celebratory and well earned drinks! All in all this was one of the most rewarding trips I’ve been on, Ian’s enthusiasm and knowledge along with his Sherpa’s made this a thoroughly enjoyable trip, Hats off to Ian Taylor Trekking!
