A view from the Summit of Mount Everest

Home Latest News A view from the Summit of Mount Everest

In 2008, I stood on the summit of Mount Everest. Everest has changed since then but my view from the summit changed everything. At the time, I was the youngest Irishman to reach the top of the world. But looking back now, that moment wasn’t the peak of the journey—it was the beginning of everything that followed.

It opened doors I could never have imagined. It shaped the path I walk today. And most importantly, it gave me a platform to help others build their own journeys—on the mountains and far beyond them.

We achieved both goals and I became the youngest Irishman to summit Everest at the time. It was an adventure that gave me the confidence I needed. I also took on the challenge of filming the adventure and successfully released our Everest documentary ‘A Summit Calling’.

In 2007, a friend and I set out with an ambitious goal: to climb four mountains on four continents in one year. But reaching summits wasn’t enough. We wanted the journey to mean something more. So we committed to raising $100,000 to build a school in Uganda.

By the end of the expedition, we had achieved both goals:

  • Climbed the mountains
  • Raised the funds
  • Built the Mount Everest Primary School in Uganda

That experience changed how I viewed adventure forever. It wasn’t just about personal achievement anymore, it was about impact and following purpose.

The Right Team Changes Everything

One of the biggest lessons from Everest wasn’t about climbing, it was about people.

Success came down to:

  • Building the right team
  • Defining clear roles
  • Setting targets
  • Constantly evaluating progress

We trained with professionals. Focused on our weaknesses. Developed our strengths. And through it all, we trusted each other. That trust made the difference between success and failure. And interestingly… We had fun doing it.

How One Summit in 2008 Changed My Life and Helped Me Change Others

Reaching the summit of Everest gave me something I had never truly felt before: belief.

Not just belief that I could climb a mountain—but belief that:

  • I could push beyond limits
  • I could build something meaningful
  • I could lead others toward their goals

We also documented the entire journey and released the film: “A Summit Calling.” Filming that expedition taught me something important:
Your story matters, because it can inspire someone else to start theirs.

Everest Has Changed—And So Have I

Everest today is very different from what I experienced in 2008.

What’s Changed on Everest

  • More commercial expeditions and larger numbers on the mountain
  • Increased infrastructure and logistics
  • Greater accessibility—but also greater risk when not managed properly
  • More focus on speed rather than experience

But one thing hasn’t changed: Everest still reveals who you are.

It exposes your preparation, your mindset, your team, and your ability to adapt under pressure.

From Climber to Leader: Building a Life After Everest

Since that summit in 2008, my journey has evolved far beyond climbing.

1. Leading Treks Around the World

I now guide people on some of the world’s most iconic adventures:

  • Everest Base Camp
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Aconcagua
  • The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Through Ian Taylor Trekking, we don’t just take people to mountains, we help them:

  • Build confidence
  • Understand their bodies and limits
  • Achieve goals they once thought impossible

2. Speaking to Teams and Companies

Everest gave me real-world lessons in:

  • Leadership
  • Resilience
  • Team dynamics
  • Performing under pressure

Today, I speak to companies and teams about:

  • How to build high-performing teams
  • How to handle adversity
  • How to create a vision and execute it

Because the same principles that get you to the top of Everest… apply directly to business and life.

3. Building Businesses With Purpose

That one expedition helped lay the foundation for:

Each business is built on the same core values:

  • Integrity
  • Experience
  • Delivering real value to people

4. Giving Back Through Our Foundation

The school in Uganda was just the beginning.

Today, through our foundation and ongoing projects, we continue to:

  • Build schools
  • Support communities in Nepal, Tanzania, Peru, and Ecuador
  • Create long-term, sustainable impact

This is what matters most. Because success means very little if it doesn’t help others.

The Real Lesson From Everest

Everest didn’t just change my life.

It showed me what’s possible when:

  • You believe in something bigger than yourself
  • You surround yourself with the right people
  • You take action—even when others doubt you

I was told many times I wasn’t good enough. But standing on that summit and everything that followed, proved otherwise.

Create Your Own Journey

You don’t have to climb Everest to change your life.

But you do have to:

  • Set a goal
  • Commit fully
  • Push through discomfort
  • And bring others along the way

Because the real reward isn’t the summit. It’s the person you become—and the lives you impact along the journey.
