I am sitting in Svalbard right now getting ready to return to Oslo and Dublin. Five minutes after we had been dropped off at our starting point of the ski tour across Svalbard, we were hit with a 5.0 earthquake. I was reminded of April 2015 when I was in Kathmandu and hit with the devastating 7.8 earthquake.
On the 25th April 2015 I was in Kathmandu after another successful Island peak climb. I was sitting with my lead Sherpa, Dawa talking about the next group we had coming in 7 days later, things that needed to be done and we talked about earthquakes and how we need to act if one happens. At 11:20am, we left the Nirvana cafe at the amazing and ancient Buddhist Swayambhunath (monkey temple) temple area and at 12 o’clock the Nirvana cafe was gone.
I was lucky enough to return to Kathmandu and the Everest Base Camp Trek for the whole month of October 2015 and it was good to return to Kathmandu and feel comfortable in a place I have been coming to every year for over a decade.
